Also known as Palacio de Oriente, official residence of the Kings of Spain, it is almost unused, except for official acts. At one end of the palace there is the Teatro Real and at the other end La Almudena Cathedral.
The Royal Palace of Madrid was inaugurated in 1751. With over 135,000 square metres and 3,418 rooms, it is the largest in Western Europe and one of the largest in the world.
It is one of the few official residences of heads of state that is open to the public. Nearly 2 million visitors come every year. It is located on Bailén Street and is next to the Catedral de la Almudena.
