It holds the title of Italy's most important airport. It was founded in 1956 and is located at Fiumicino, serving Rome. It has both international and domestic flights.
Rome's international airport better known as Fiumicino Airport (FCO) or Leonardo da Vinci is the largest airport in Italy.
Terminal 1 (T1) is dedicated to domestic Italian flights and after the restructuring of the airport it is also used as an arrival and departure terminal for many European flights. Terminal 3 (T3), on the other hand, is for international flights only.
Fiumicino Airport has banks, post offices, pharmacies, a medical clinic, shops, restaurants, cafés, bars and bookshops.
There are several ways to reach Fiumicino Airport; either by public transport or by private car.
To get there by car from the centre of Rome it takes approximately 35-45 minutes if there is no traffic, if there are complications on the road the journey time will be longer.
There is a taxi rank outside each terminal at Fiumicino airport.
Taxis from Fiumicino airport have a fixed fare of 50€ to the city centre and the fare increases at night, depending on the number of suitcases and the distance of the journey. The price cannot exceed 70€ from inside the Raccordo Anulare to the airport by law.
The train station is located inside Fiumicino airport itself. There are two train lines to Rome: -Airport Fiumicino - Roma Termini: this is a direct train (no intermediate stops) which leaves every 30 minutes and the journey time is approximately 30 minutes. You can buy the ticket at the electronic ticket offices at the airport and the price is 14€. -Fiumicino Airport - Roma Tiburtina: this is a train with several stops at stations in the city but less central. The ticket costs €8.
There are several companies that offer a shuttle service from the airport to the centre of Rome. -Terravision: is a company that if you book a ticket online you get a special price of 5€. -SIT: runs 22 trips a day from the airport to Rome with stops at Piazza Cavour and Termini Station. The cost of the trip is €6 and the ticket can be bought on the bus.
- Fiumicino Airport - Termini: the first bus leaves at 8.30am and the last one at 00.30am.
- Termini - Fiumicino Airport: the first bus leaves at 5.00 am and the last one at 8.30 pm.
-Cotras and Atral: they are the most economical solution as they link Fiumicino airport with different stations in Rome. You can find the buses at the exit of Terminal T3 of the airport: they are blue or white buses.
- Fiumicino Airport - Roma Termini: from 6:05 am to 8:40 pm. The ticket costs 5€ per person.
- Roma Termini - Fiumicino Airport: from 7:10 am to 9:40 pm. The ticket costs 4€ per person.
There are different types of parking at the airport: -Long term: the shuttle service is free and leaves every 15 minutes. From 01 a.m.-05 a.m. the service is available on request, using the intercoms at each shuttle stop. Multi-level-comfort: perfect for short-term parking and conveniently connected to the terminals by a pedestrian walkway equipped with moving pavements. Executive: offers insurance coverage and is a fast check-in service every day from 7:15am to 10:00pm. -In front of the terminals: in the arrivals and departures terminals, parking spaces are indicated by blue lines on the pavement and you can park for a maximum of one hour. While parked, it is necessary to show on the windscreen the payment receipt which consists of 3 euros. -Pink cars: parking spaces are dedicated to new and expectant mothers and female travellers.
The fastest and most comfortable way to park in the airport. The driver will be waiting for you at the scheduled time at the terminal. At your return, call the driver, who will deliver your car to you.
The cheapest option: free 5-15 minutes transfer to the terminal. A free shuttle will bring you from the parking lot to the terminal and back when you return.
