The Four Fountains rise at the intersection of two of Rome's most important streets, the homonymous Via delle Quattro Fontane, and Via del Quirinale. The famous fountains were financed by Muzio Mattei but commissioned by Pope Sixtus V, who, between 1588 and 1593, ordered an urban expansion project. The decorations of the fountains symbolise on one hand Rome and Florence and on the other hand, through the sculptures of the godesses Diana and Juno, strength and loyalty.
